Industrializing Machine Learning Applications

Over half of the AI applications do not last in production environments because of the lack of traceability, ownership, feedback, and monitoring. Furthermore, adoption is difficult due to the black box nature of deep learning models where it is in general not possible to show why a prediction was made. Applying AI and machine learning (ML) is nevertheless key in creating competitive products and processes, and a strong mastery of the MLOps process essential. Next to that, having an integrated feedback process with the human-in-the-loop is necessary to keep models running in the long run.

At Prodrive Technologies we are developing an AI framework that serves the purpose of enabling robust ML applications in industrial environments and features the following:

• Management and standardization of training data and metadata including labeling interfaces;
• Automation of TensorFlow and PyTorch model training on distributed clusters running Kubernetes;
• Generalization of model serving and deployment with REST and gRPC interfaces;
• Monitoring and model performance dashboards using Splunk and Power BI. On top of that, one of the major goals is to add explainers to our deep learning models so stakeholders can clearly see why a certain prediction or classification was made which will help the adoption of new machine learning applications in the factory.

The framework is currently used to train and deploy various deep learning inspection models with the goal of automating the manual product inspections performed in our production facilities. Production employees can give feedback on model predictions and label image data that is used for the (re)training of models (interface is shown in the attached image). Support will be added for time-series and tabular data applications as well, such as robot pick-placement and forecasting.
